Alsace Lorraine

We will be staying with a family that has offered to put us up for 4 or 5 nights (in their home outside of Strasbourg) and drive us to destinations in the region for two of those days. The (very) tentative plan follows:

  1. Spend the day walking around and exploring Strasbourg
  2. (No-car day). Take a train to Nancy (some say it's awesome; some say it's not worth it! thoughts?) Or perhaps somewhere else?
  3. Drive to Ribeauville and Colmar and return to the family's home near Strasbourg to spend the night.
  4. Drive to Freiburg im Breisgau to see that German city and take a driving tour somewhere in the Black Forest. Then back to the family's home to sleep.

  5. With a couple of more days to spend, but with no car, I'd LOVE to take a train to Fussen, Germany to see Neuschwanstein, but I have no idea how difficult a trip that would be to make. Has anyone done that? If so, any guidance about train transportation there would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well, now that you've seen the itinerary for Alsace Lorraine, do you have any suggestions about good destinations that have been overlooked and should be included?

THANK YOU for your time.

There are lots of places to see around Freiburg. Titisee is beautiful, albeit a little touristy. I like Füssen, but there are too many things to see in the region to go all the way to Füssen. At a max, go across the river to Offenburg, then up the Kinzig to Hausach and take the Schwarzwaldbahn to Triberg. Stunning. You might also consider going from Hausach up to Alpirsbach and Freudenstadt, then down to Baden-Baden.
