Spending 2 nights there in July. Will have a car. Any suggestions on places to stay and things to see/do? (Not a wine drinker)
Stay in Colmar. Lovely city. Good base for touring some of the villages along the wine route. We stayed in a b&b called Chez Leslie. www.chezleslie.com Highly recommend.
I agree with Conny. Colmar is just such a lovely town. Lots of half-timbered houses/buildings; lovely canal; the Unterlinden Museum. With a car you can take the "wine route" drive north thru some lovely little villages -- Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, etc. They are very close together, and it would make for a wonderful day -- even without the wine.
We stayed at Hotel Les Maison des Tetes in Colmar, and it was very nice. The hotel itself is one of the major tourist sites in Colmar.
If you have kids with you, or even if you just want a "different" experience, try La Montagne des Singes-Monkey Mountain-. It is a preserve where they study monkeys and thier behaviors. You will be able to feed the monkeys and get real close to them as they are not in cages. My kids-teenagers at the time- had fun interacting with them. Look them up on thier website as I can't remember exactly where it is but we stopped there on our way from Colmar to Straubourg. There was a sign on the highway advertising it tho I haven't seen it in any guidebooks--
Thanks Paula, Conny, and Janis
Colmar looks very inviting. Won't have any kids with, but I think the monkey thing sounds great.
