We are going to Switzerland in August and were wondering if anyone knew anything about the alpine cheese dairies there. Are there any near Lauterbrunnen/Muerren or Gruyeres that anyone knows about?
If you want a visit to the actual cheesemaking dairy, it looks like the Lauterbrunnen tourist office organizes a visit every Wednesday. Just click on the "visit to an alpine dairy" for link for details:

We visited one outside of Murren (probably the one the tourist office take you to) and on close to Gruyere (I think it was in a town called Molson) They are small and it doesn't take long to see one. If you could get on a tour, it would probably be a lot more interesting. The one in Murren, we just peaked through the windows. The one near Gruyere, had a little movie and then we watched them work with the cheese.
There is a small one at the B&B in Obersteinberg up above the Lauterbrunnen valley (far end). But check with the local tourism office. ALso - Sprinz and Interlaken should have some info. Plenty in the area.
We went to La Maison du Gruyere Cheese Factory and liked it. It was a tad bit cheesy (no pun intended) but it we got an overview of how they made the cheese and then watched them in the process. They also gave three samples of the gruyeres cheese with the tour. They had a restaurant attached if you wanted to eat lunch there as well. It was a couple of minutes outside of Gruyere. You could also try myswitzerland.com and they may have some more dairies listed.
Yes, we also visited the Maison de Gruyere, and nearby is the Cailler/Nestle chocolate factory musuem tour also. It was our kids favorite day of 3 weeks in Europe -- chocolate and cheese -- yummy goodness. Plus there's a sled/luge track between the two villages that is great fun in the summer to race down on the plastic sleds. You control them with a hand brake.
