Along the Rhine Questions???

In Rudesheim, Baharach and St Goar, are the train stations close to the kd docking area. I am going to be by myself and want to be sure there are no surprises. Are they in walking distance? Also, while I am in each town is everything (castles, Niederwald Monumen/chair lift) within walking distance. Thanks Sarah

It's been quite a few years since I was in Bacharach and St. Goar, but I remember them being really small. Everything was in walking distance. We stayed at the place recommended by Rick Steves that was an old castle and right next to the tracks. It was great! Kimi

The train station in Bacharach is at the upriver end of town. It's not a very long walk, just a few minutes, to the boat dock which is about at the middle.

In St. Goar, the station is closer, just a few block up the hill from the boat dock.

The castle in St. Goar, Rheinfels, is a bit of a walk uphill, but when the K-D ships are running, there is a tractor pulled trolly from the marketplace, adjacent to the boat dock, to the castle. It only costs a couple of Euro.

The castle, Stahleck, in Bacharach is a hostel now. There must be a road up to it, but if you are on foot, it is a bit of a climb up the hill.

I was there last October and in St. Goar and Baharach they are very close. The towns are very small and the train actually runs right along the Rhine. We got off the train in St. Goar and took the KD boat to Baharach. It is less than 5 minutes. I was not in Rudesheim, so I cannot answer that part. The castles can be seen in each town but the walk is always longer when you have to go straight up. Probably 30 minutes. Have fun. It is a great part of the world!!
