Hello - I'll be in Normandy (Bayeux) around the All Saints Day holiday and am wondering how much will be closed. Specifically, is Nov 1 a bad day to visit Mont St Michel or will at least some places be open for tourists? Also wondering if trains will get booked quickly that weekend. Thanks for any advice.
Elizabeth, if you are interested in whether the current community in residence at Mont S Michel will have their church/liturgies open, you could check their website. If you google Monastic Communities of Jerusalem, that will take you to their website. Then go to the MSM portion. Their schedules are posted there.
The historical portion of the monastery that tourists visit keeps a different schedule.
Thanks. I found the Mont St. Michel website at http://mont-saint-michel.monuments-nationaux.fr/en/. It appears the only days the tourist part of the abbey is closed are Jan 1, May 1, and Dec. 25.
For any holiday in Europe, I suggest you book your trains in advance, especially if it is a weekend. Even if they are not on holiday, they may be traveling to be with family.
Expect crowds. I was traveling from France to Italy on the train over the Nov 1st holiday several years ago and it was quite busy. Lot's of family traveling together. Tourist attractions will likely be open and crowded. And looking at a calendar, Nov 1st is a Thursday and the french are well known for "faire la pont", which means stretching the holiday into a long weekend.
