Algarve to Porto

We will be in Salema (Algarve) this Sept for a week. From there we head north to the Douro Valley (east of Porto) for a few nights. I'm looking for advice on pros and cons of the various modes of travel between the two. We will have a car in the Algarve. 4 adults are travelling together.

We can: (1) drive to the Douro (6-7 hrs); (2) drop the car in Faro and fly to Porto and then rent another car (flight is early a.m., but only takes an hour); (3) bus from Faro to Porto then rent a car, (4) train from Faro to Porto.

Has any of you done any of these connections? Your advice?

I'm not sure the drive will take quite as long as you think. Regardless, the scenery is worth it, even along the major roads.

Look at the time consumed in turning in one car and picking up another. Then look at the time in changing modes of transportation, waiting for next means of transportation, etc.

Then look at the cost of the second car rental which will have a high daily cost due to the short term.

Total time in transit won't be very different.

Last, look at the cost of four train or plane tickets compared to a few gallons of gas.

Drive.
