I have been checking airfares between Madrid, Seville, and Granada and have found cheap fares. The one thing that I was not able to find was the cost for checked bags. I went on airline websites but they would never quote an amount. A high fee could negate a cheap fare. Anyone had experience with this?
Not sure why you are focusing on air. Much faster between those cities by train rather than air. And the advance tickets prices are very cheap. And the bus from Seville to Granada is about the same time as a train but even cheaper.
I think that I posed the question wrong. Thinking of flying between Madrid and Seville or Granada and then from either Seville or Granada to Paris. Checked on skyscanner.com and found cheap flights on EasyJet and Ryanair but the baggage fees were not shwon.
We flew from Seville to BCN for about $35/each one way, on Spanair, and i dont remember them charging us any bag fee...i checked my backpack b/c it was large, but my b-friend brought his on the plane. I woud suggest calling the airlines directly & asking. I guess they might let it slode for 1 bag, but if you have 4 suitcases, i am sure they will charge you. easyjet & ryan air make their $$ that way!
One thing to be careful about, overseas budget airlines often have lower baggage allowances that for U.S. airlines, with big charges for going over. (Actually can be true whether budget or not for overseas airlines). Madrid to Seville or Granada train is much better. You might be able to find a cheaper flight that the train ticket, but think of the potential delays, hassle of the airport, time lost getting to and from the airport, etc. I look for ways to take the train within Europe, try to avoid taking a flight. Even Madrid to Paris, the overnight train is great. I have done it, and the difference between killing the better part of a day for a 90 minute flight vs. sleeping on the train, if you can do it train wins hands down.
No reason at all to fly from Madrid to Sevilla or Granada. It's a very easy, comfy train ride. I would fly from Spain to Paris. Most people don't sleep well on overnight trains and they do not run every day. It's a long trip by rail. Unless you are only carrying a purse and small daybag - which is unlikely - I'd expect luggage fees. The main airline page should have those standard fees - not the rate quote pages.
Not sure where you are looking, but on all the airline site I used I was able to find the baggage cost. Last summer we flew Vueling from Seville to Barcelona, and Barcelona to Rome. Great airline & fares .
I would not hesitate flying within Spain especially if the distances are long enough. We flew Vueling Airlines in the fall between Madrid-Barcelona and Barcelona-Seville. The flights left on time and the fares cheaper than the train fares I was looking at. I thought the planes would be older but they are comparable to what you would ride in the US. I would definitely recommend looking at the fine print on luggage fees. Vueling clearly states them on their website. It's a little bear purchasing tickets because your card could be declined initially until you inform your bank of your purchase. Make sure you're absolutely positive about the purchase because I can't even imagine what you have to go through for a refund. Highly recommended.
