Does anyone know an affordable, clean hotel near the city center in Amsterdam for the end of December?
Not sure what you consider affordable. I just got back from Amsterdamm where I stayed at Hotel Weichmann which is located on the Prinsengraght. Walkable to everything. I reserved their smallest room at 65 euros. It turned out to be too small & had no TV (which I knew ahead of time). For the first time ever, I was just too frugal. I upgraded as soon as I could to a double for 100+ euros (105, 115 - can't remember). Room was fairly basic but nice & clean. This rate includes breakfast. You might check out their website which includes a map showing their location as well in relation to some of the sights. If you're not a walker, they're at least 4-5 blocks from the tramlines. Their staff is friendly & helpful.
Thanks, I'll take a look.
Our family always really likes our stays at the Owl Hotel, in a quiet neighborhood, a couple of blocks behind the Marriott and near Vondel Park and the Van Gogh Museum. The rates are reasonable, the breakfast good, and it is always clean and pleasant. We will be there in late June.

By the way, the open air museum in Arnhem is open for the holidays at a reduced rate because the buildings are closed, but they have ice skating and walking through the villages in their winter clothes. Could be a nice day trip on a clear day.
Happy Holidays

I second the motion for the Owl Hotel. It is within walking distance of most museums, is in a quiet residential neighbourhood and for Amsterdam, is reasonably priced.
Thanks, folks. I tried the Weichmann and Owl, but both are sold out.
Hi Bob,
The last time I was in Amsterdam, I stayed at the Hotel Prinsenhof.

It's right on the Prinsengracht Canal and we enjoyed it quite a lot. It it is however no more than the equivalent of a two star hotel. But for my daughter and me, it was perfect. Veeeery steep stairs, in fact, they have a pulley device to lift your luggage up so you don't have to struggle with your baggage up the stairs.
Although I have stayed at many other places, it seems that Hotel Ibis-City Stopera has been the most accessible in a jam. There are a few in the city, but this one is right around the corner from Waterlooplein. It's cheap, around 75 euro, and very clean. It's close to everything and a 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal. www.ibishotel.com
It's a chain, so it's not quaint- but my guess is that you won't be spending too much time in the hotel room anyway. Get a room with a canal view.
