Planning on spending a few days in the region exploring some great bubbly and was looking for something 'back door' in the region. Any suggestions?

You might try checking www.chateauxhotels.com and look under the Champagne Ardennes region. I saw a few listed for Reims...didn't check Epernay.

I booked a chateu stay in Epernay area for May next year. It is called Chateu Etoges. I did not find many inexpensive places to stay in this area. Good luck.

Brandon, check out Logis de France on the web for small family-run inns in the area. We have always found them to be pleasant and affordable.
