Affordable Austria/Switzerland

My family of three is wanting to spend a month in Europe. Two weeks in France, and two weeks in either Switzerland or Austria. I'm trying to find a gite style (furnished apt or home) in either Austria or Switzerland that is around $350 weekly. Do they exist? I love Salzburg and St. Gallen, and have been looking in Interlaken...does anyone have any pointers for around these areas?? We're looking for a town that will be a good home base for two weeks...not too small, not too big...walkable.
Thanks!

I am not sure you would want to stay in something costing less than 40E/day. You need to double that to get anything with a reasonable location. And for Switzerland you might have to triple it.

Hi Maggie, I think you really need to do serious research on the costs in Switzerland! I would be thinking about $600 a week off the tourist trail and more like $800 to $1000 per week in and round Interlaken or even St. Gallen for that matter. Jim.

There is no way you will find a rental in the Alps for that small amount of money. For comparison, last year, we rented a very basic chalet in a very un-touristed area of the Italian Alps. €800 for a week. I stopped looking for mountain chalet rentals in Switzerland when I didn't find anything remotely in my price range.

We just spent three weeks in Switzerland on a home exchange...if we had to pay for a place for that long we never could have afforded it! Consider this option if budget is a factor...we even exchange cars which makes it a wonderful option.
I can guarantee that you won't find a rental anywhere in Switzerland for that price.

Even in the cheapest place in the highest mountain areas of Murren Switzerland we still pay 45chf per person per night with shared bathroom. There is such as thing as "sleep in the hay" deals where you actually do sleep in the barn in the hay with blankets and breakfast included. Never done it, but I think it just might fit your budget: http://www.schlaf-im-stroh.ch/en/

Consider staying near your destinations in Germany, where self-catering apartments fall within your budget. Langenargen is on the north shore of Lake Constance near Lindau, just one place you might look into; daytrip from there to St. Gallen and into Austria? This place in Langenargen goes for 40€/night, according to the town's accommodations brochure: http://www.ferienhaus.moebel-jensen.de/#slides/IMG_3078.JPG The apartment descriptions for Langenargen start on brochure page 81 at the site below (German.) You'll find other listings at similar prices: http://www.langenargen-tourismus.de/fileadmin/Mediendatenbank/PDF/20.12.2011PrivatzimmerFerienwohnungenGastgeberverzeichnisSchwaebischerBodensee.pdf The town's website has some English pages and also provides a long list of accommodations. Just click on "suche starten": Langenargen website

Thanks for your input everyone! After extended research, my family and I have decided to stay the entire month or so in France, and venture to Switzerland/Austria next trip when the budget allows for more weekly on a gite/apt/cottage. I really appreciate the input, though. Thanks! Maggie
