During the first week of August I will be visiting my brother in Ulm, Germany. I plan to travel to Salzburg, Rothenurg ODT, Neuswanstein and perhaps Salzburg. Any recommendations regarding Salzburg? What is a must see? Should a stay the night or do it as a day trip (3 hours from Ulm). Thanks.
I am going to echo something that I said regarding Regensburg. Sometimes, the best part of visiting these towns is an evening stroll. In August, it might be hot and tiring during the day, but cool off considerable in the evening. It is safe to walk the streets as modest crowds will be out for supper, a glass of wine a stop at a eis cafe (ice cream parlor).
Regards, Gary
If you're going to go that far, I'd stay the night. Don't know where your interests lie, but I'd recommend the Mozart Wohnhaus and the fortress.
I think Salzburg is lovely and I would spend the night. Try to combine with a concert. There is almost always some kind of concert. The castle is quite good. While I didn't see the Geburtzhaus for Mozart, I did enjoy the other museum. Also, the cathedral is interesting and walking around the town and seeing the traditional cemeteries and old streets is very pleasant. I walked up to the old convent one evening and loved the views down to the town. I spent three nights and two full days. I did do the SOM tour (Bob's special tours) which I really enjoyed. It took me out into the countryside. Since it was with a van we were small group and I did not think that the guide was misleading or pretending that it all was filmed in Salzburg. Pam
Thanks all for the comments. I've booked two nights in Salzburg. I also got Rick's DVD from the public library and his Germany-Austria book.
I'd say certainly the Hohensalzburg fortress. The cathedral is definitely worth poking your nose into to see the Baroque art/architecture. I agree--stay an evening; Salzburg is most enchanting in the evening. Go to the Augustiner Brewery for a unique eating/drinking experience. Wander down Getreidegasse to see distinctive shops and their wrought-iron signs--Salzburg's delightful idea of a shopping mall. Go across the river on Staats Bridge, turn right on Steingasse, and you'll wander down pure old Salzburg byways few tourists ever discover--one of my favorite areas of Salzburg.
Jose,
you may want to venture from Salzburg into the lake district, which is only a few minutes away, but extraordinarily beautiful. Also, Berchtesgaden is a short drive away as well, with beautiful scenery and lots of history (Hitler's Eagles Nest).
I'd stay the night. The fortress, the city center churches, fountains, parks and cemetery are all worth seeing and within walking distance of the town center.
Walk along the river in the evening to the Augustiner brewery. Step out onto one of the bridges for an incredible view of the lit up old city.
