Advice please on German Itinerary for 9 days

Our first time in Germany and my husband not to keen on traveling so want to win him over. We have 9 days (not counting arrival and departure days). Right now this is what I have: Arrive Frankfurt > Bacharach 2 nights > ? Rothenburg or straight to Munich and use as a home base for day trips? All travel will be by rail. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Definitely see the advantage of open jaw now. So does
Bacharach (2 nights)> Rothenburg (1 night)> Munich (3-4 nights)> head back towards Frankfurt to leave 18 Oct.
Thank you

If you have the time try to stay at least one day & night in Frankfurt. There is lots to see and do in Frankfurt and I would recommend a day at the spa in nearby Bad Homburg. On our trip back in May we spent an afternoon at the Kaiser Wilhelms Bad spa - got a full massage and soaked in the waters. What a great way to end a wonderful trip. You can catch the local rail network from Frankfurt to Bad Homburg for just a few euros. Frankfurt is loaded with museums and the Roemerberg is worth a visit.

I would go directly to Rothenburg for 2 nights - explore Rothenburg, take the Night Watchman tour and next day take a day trip to Nürnberg. Then to München for 4 nights with a day trip to Berchtesgaden - Kehlstein is open throught October and go through the Documentation Center.... or day trip to Salzburg. Spend your last 3 nights in Bacharach... LOTS of things to do on the Rhein (Marksburg Castle, cruise Rhein from Bacharach to St Goar, and more... )and close to FRA for your trip home.
