Hotel Deutsches Theater on Landwehrstrasse 18 (careful--there are 2 hotels with this name, and the other is not nearly as nice). Stayed 2 nights in Oct. 2008 and liked it fine. Good breakfast. http://www.hoteldeutschestheater.de/eng/hdt_eng.html
Also, the Pension Seibel at the Viktualienmarkt is inexpensive with a good breakfast and easily reached from the Hbf by tram or S-bahn to Marienplatz.

My daughter and I(I was 64) stayed at the Wombats Hostel and was very pleased. I did not feel out of place. It was quite and very clean. Had a very nice breakfast and right around the corner from the main train station.

Catherine,

When will you be in Munich? Now that OktoberFest has started, there likely won't be ANY vacancies in the city at all.

If you're travelling in a less busy time, you might have a look at This Hotel. It's only a short walk (about 10-15 minutes) from the main Hbf or a short Taxi ride. The Hotel is very comfortable, the staff are wonderful and the breakfasts are fantastic!

One note on the Hostels. I'm in the same "age range" and routinely stay in Hostels. As I travel solo, I usually get a Dorm room and haven't had any issues with that so far. Some Hostels have double rooms, but they usually book up quickly.

One point to mention though - Hostels in Bavaria used to have an age limit of about 28, but I've heard a few rumours that's been rescinded?

Cheers!

Take a look at Rick's book. He recommends several places. Also don't rule out the Marienplatz area; its just 1 stop away from the train station on the subway.
