My husband (of 27 years) and I are planning a "Romance in Paris" late Sept 2011. Any suggestions for romantic accomodations, dining, activities etc would be appreciated. We're very young at heart and Marais was suggested as a good area to base ourselves.
A bottle of wine, a baguette, good cheese and two glasses. Walk onto the Pont des Artes at sunset and enjoy each other's company there.
Hi Shar: I would recommend the same thing as Doug except that it would be at the west end of Pont Neuf. Sit on a bench and watch the sunset.
In my opinion the best neighborhoods to stay in would be the 4th, 5th or 6th arrondissements. They are more lively areas with a lot of things to do. They are also well located for walking to many typical tourist destinations. Many people here will recommend the Rue Cler area (7th), and while the area is very nice it is also very quiet. I stayed in Rue Cler my 1st visit to Paris. I found it to be not terribly convenient to anything besides the Eiffel Tower. My 2nd visit I stayed in the Latin Quarter (5th) and in October I will return to the Latin Quarter. I love to go to the Eiffel Tower the first night in town, when the tower is lit up. The lights twinkle at the top of the hour and it is magical. A sunset river cruise (forget the dinner cruises) is also very nice. Just wandering around enjoying being in the most beautiful city in the world - my opinion - or having a picnic and just enjoying your surroundings and each other can't be beat. As for where to stay, it depends on what you like. I like to rent an apartment. Hotel rooms are typically very small. I also like to have a kitchen. How long will you be there? If only for a few days I would stay at a hotel. For longer I would consider an apartment. I can recommend a fantastic apartment in the Latin Quarter if you are interested. The owner lives in Sausalito. If you would like details you can PM me. Have a great trip!!
Great advice from Andrea. On the Isle St. Louis, there's a beautiful boutique hotel called Hotel Lutece (Google it). That's where I would go. You'd be right in the middle of the city and could walk to just about everything. I think it's officially part of the 4th arr. (Marais).
I love Hotel de Lutece and staying on Ile St. Louis. It's my favorite neighborhood in Paris. It's like a small village, very charming and romantic, surrounded by the Seine river and amazing views.
I love the Marais. Spend some time maybe eat dinner on the Place des Vosges. It's a small and utterly lovely arcaded place. (really more of a large courtyard). Victor Hugo lived there, and its an idyllic little refuge from the bustle and energy of the Marais. Have dinner on Monmartre and after dinner stroll around the old streets and sit on the steps in front of Sacre Coeur where all of Paris is spread out below you twinkling in the night. The view is better than from the Eiffel Tower because the ET is in your field of view. The Luxembourg Gardens on the Left Bank scream "Paris", and you can have a wonderful time roaming up and down the Rue Moufftard afterwards choosing among dozens of restaurants and cafes. Eat at the brasserie on the end of the isle st Louis where you are looking pointblank at Notre Dame. Then have ice cream at Berthillion and eat it as you walk across the Seine to the Place Michel, where the fountain should be running. My favorite hotel in the Marais is the Hotel Castex, which is delightful, well-located, and reasonably priced (check their website).
WOW!!! Thanks to all of you for replying..your suggestions are fantastic!!! I was considering the Isle before but now am convinced that that is the place to stay. Love hearing from all the romantics out there!!
Hi Shar, My husband and I had our romantic trip to Paris last summer. We had dinner at the Jules Verne Restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, expensive, but worth it- make your reservations online two months in advance. We also attended at chamber music concert at Saint Chapelle and had dinner afterwards.
Hope you have a marvelous time.
We just returned from Paris. Stayed in the Marais for the first time and loved it...walked almost everywhere. We stayed at the Hotel de Nice, nice, reasonable $, and next door to square with many cafes. There's a metro stop right across the street and we woke Sat. morning to a lovely small market in square directly across the street as well. Weekends can be loud...motorcycles!! But I found that to be true in all neighborhoods except possibly Rue Cler. Rue Cler did not do much for us, just our opinion. Have fun! You may want to look at Tom's Guide to Paris on the internet before going, lots of usable information. And, learn the basics in French before leaving. It always helps with friendliness of Parisians if you at least try. busuu.com is a great site for learning some basic French and free for the first month I think.
