Additions to Rick Steves' trip to Spain and Portugal

We are taking a RS trip to Spain and Portugal in 2009. We would like to stay and additional week or two (renting a car) and welcome recommendations of areas/places to go and things to see in addition to what's included on the tour.

It would be helpful if you could describe your tastes in travel, the kind of things you like/don't, etc.

One obvious place to add on a week would be Morocco, but it's not everyone's cup of tea (that would be sweet, mint tea).

It also depends on where your tour ends. From Madrid you could go to Salamanca, Spain; then north to Porto, Portugal; and Santiago de Compostela, Spain--you could even continue north to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim Museum.

Thanks for the interest. The tour begins in Barcelona and ends in Lisbon. We enjoy everything from museums to walking/hiking to people watching. I think we'll have had enough of large cities by the end of the trip (the RS tour takes us to Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Granada, Arcos, Seville, the Argave coast and Lisbon).

Hi Brenda, I don't know if you bought your airline tickets yet but if not how about taking a train into France? You are already seeing plenty of Spain & Portugal and this will give you a very exciting change. You stated a week or two extension and that along with the 14 days you will have already been in these countries, seems a bit long. Take advantage of the extra time and explore another country. France has so much to offer and train travel in Europe is so easy. Good luck!

If you have a car then I would go to Porto – Santiago - Leon - Rioja - San Sebastian. We did this in reverse and it was one of the best trips we have taken. I posted pictures and details at our personal blog @ http://gadtravel.blogspot.com/

I think Coimbra (in Portugal) is an interesting old town, worth working into your itinerary if its description in guidebooks appeals to you.
