My outdoorsy family plans to hike in the Murren area for 5-6 days in July and would like suggestions on other things to do either in Switzerland or some other place. We are willing to fly "open jaw". My husband likes to ride bike. Amsterdam? Paris because it's Paris? Rome for same reason? Or some cool off beat place?
Amsterdam is nice for bikes. Milan is an easy half day (or so) away by train. Cinque Terra might be doable - we've flown into Zurich and taken the train to 5T via Milan the same day.
If I had your decision to make? I'd spend more days in Switzerland. Lucerne, maybe, or swing down to Zermatt for a couple of nights.
I was going to suggest the Glacier Express but maybe you would rather be hiking than riding through the mountains. If you'd like to ride, I'd suggest the GE from Zermatt to St. Moritz, then the Bernina Express to Tirano then on to Milan.
