Hi there, I am planning to be out in France/Italy in late August and I was previously going to do a 2 day stop in Paris (short trip to Paris since I've been there many times before) then go down to Loire Valley (would be my first time) for about 3 days but it's hard to get around Loire Valley without a car or a tour (which would break my budget). I'm now looking for another stop in France, perhaps a cool daytrip from Paris, that I can add for a few days. Any recommendations of any must sees? I would really love to see a castle or two OR check out a winery. Please post your recommendations! Thanks!
Beaune is a good choice...excellent wine, and good sightseeing as well...The hospital (ancient) is wonderful, especially the painting that has been restored.
Reims and Rouen are both within easy striking distance and offer a lot to do to fill the day. My choice would be the former.
Champagne- Reims;
Consider Chartres, an easy train ride (about 1 hour) from Gare Montparnasse, if you haven't been there. Or Reims (from Gare de l'Est), where you get a great cathedral plus Champagne. Or Giverny if you like Monet and the Impressionists. Or the other suggestions above. This is a good problem to have.
If you want castles, look in to Versailles, Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte. All are accessible as day trips from Paris. Beaune (and Dijon) are both nice places, although without a car you won't get chateaux, but would get wineries. Those would be places you could easily get to and spend a few nights.
