Acommodations in Austria

We will be spending 3 nights each in Vienna and Salzburg in early June. Any suggestions for a clean, convenient, and cheap B&B? We'll be traveling by train. Will it be better to stay close to train station or in center of town? First trip to Austria so really appreciate any suggestions about accommodations or sightseeing. We'll also be in Innsbruck for one night on way to Venice. Any suggestions for Innsbruck B&B's close to train?

Hi, I would suggest staying near the West Train Station in Vienna (Westbahnhof). Numerous street cars stop there as well as 2 subway lines, U-3 and U-6. These will get you to the center...Stephansplatz. It's also a good walk from Westbahnhof to the center. If you're arriving in Vienna from Salzburg, you'll be coming into Wien Westbahnhof, which is being expanded.

Hi, Staying in the Westbahnhof area you can access by streetcar direct Schloß Schönbrunn, Zentralfriedhof (main cemetery for the composers and the military/war graves), and the Heeresgeschichtlichesmuseum (the military history/army musem) in addition to the center by the U-Bahn. Vienna has also the Hop On and Off tour.

We can recommend a small, family operated hotel in Salzburg. The Hotel Weisse Taube located in the Old Town area. Great location, good breakfast, helpful staff. It is also listed in RS Austria book.

Hello Kyle,
I think I would agree that getting into Vienna from Westbahnhof is easy. However, I would do it only once, upon arrival. I would stay near Stephenplatz rather than near Westbahnhof. In Salzburg, there is easy bus service from the train station to the old town/Mozart square area. I would take the bus and stay in the old part of town.

I stayed in the Stephenplatz area to be in the center of things. Easy access from the west station via metro.

Lodging in the center of Vienna generally costs more than farther away, however, the city's public transportation is excellent (trams, buses, subway), so it's not necessary to stay near the train station. Many of the less expensive places to stay in Salzburg are on the right bank near the station so that may be the area to find what you want. Most of the attractions are across the river, but there is regular bus service to the left bank. A good place to start looking for where to stay is http://www.tripadvisor.com/

Kyle, From Innsbruck to Venice runs also a direct night train which gets you to Innsbruck by ca. 0730, if you want that option too. Give yourself 4 nights in Vienna...well worth it. Can't recommend any Pensionen near the Innsbruck Hbf.

In Salzburg, we stayed at the hotel Turnerwurt (or Turnerwirt) - but the breakfast wasn't free(6 euro each maybe)...but was a buffet style, and not expensive compared to what we paid in Munich. I did find it a little out of the way - there was a bus stop right out front to it, but a roundabout way to get there...was pleased with the price and cleanliness (and I'm big on hunting down good deals at places that aren't holes)
