We stayed at the Hotel Wallis in Munich this past July and it was close to the train station, easy to walk to, reasonable price (nothing fancy) and they had the best breakfast buffet we encountered on our entire month long European trip .

Steve,

I was in Munich in May, and always stay at the Hotel Uhland. I would certainly recommend it. Clean rooms, wonderful staff and an awesome breakfast! It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the station. You'll have to check the rates on their website or Rick's book, to determine if these fit your idea of "affordable".

There's also a large Sofitel Hotel right next to the station. However, the prices might be a bit beyond your budget.

Cheers!

I know there is a Hotel Ibis very close to the train station. They would be on accor hotels web site. I have not stayed at this hotel, but I have used Hotel Ibis before since they usually have a location close to the airport. Quite often, on their web site, they will have a special "pay in advance-no refunds for cancellation fare" that can be as low as 49 euros for 2 people. (however, you want to be sure you want it since it is no refunds) I looked into staying there for a trip this September, but ended up getting an excellent week end rate at Hotel Uhland. (I've stayed at Hotel Uhland before and it is awesome- it is within walking distance to the rail station-but not super close.)

Do you really have to stay at the rail station? You know, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn go from the train station to other areas of interest...specifically Marienplatz. There you will find other hotels in the very lively and beautiful Viktualienmarkt that are nice, convenient and very affordable. Try Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt or Hotel Blauer Bock.

Thanks all. I would prefer to be somewhat close to the rail station just for convenience. We'll only be in Munich one night before heading south to Schliersee. The last time I was in Munich I had no trouble walking to everything we wanted to see.

We've stayed at the King's Center hotel twice and spent the extra for the larger room (the regular rooms are pretty small). It is CLEAN, comfortable and has an EXTREMELY wonderful staff.

It is only a couple blocks from the rail station. There is also a sister hotel (King's First Class), but it is more expensive and the King's Center is just fine, just not quite as plush.

I agree with the poster that affordability is a matter of what features are important to you - so only you can decide if it's a value.
