What castles are available for an over-night in Germany? I am especially looking with one that that does not feel like it has been completely modernized. This is for a family.
I'm not sure if it's for youth only, but the ruins of Starkenburg, which overlooks the town of Heppenheim (near Mannheim and Heidelberg... and within view from my village) operates a hostel. Part of the Kaiserburg in Nürnberg is now a hostel.
Sheryl, You might have a look at Burg Stahleck in Bacharach, which is a very well run Hostel (part of the HI Hostels chain). It's perfect for families, especially as there are often school groups staying there. That was the case when I was there in late June, and the Teachers were actually conducting classes in the Courtyard (and in some of the nearby ruins). It has a fantastic view of the town and the Rhine, and serves great food. One tip though - if you decide to stay there, budget for a Taxi, as it's LONG climb from the station (Taxi details in the Guidebook). Happy travels!
We stayed here once and really enjoyed it. http://www.hotel-schoenburg.com Good luck!
I've stayed at Burg Stahleck and really liked it. It's certainly one of my favorite hostels. It's like other hostels, not really a medieval experience, but clean, quiet and well run.
Another enthusiastic vote here for Burg Stahleck in Bacharach - it's a wonderful place to stay. And an incredible bargain. The stairs will be good for you. Builds character. ;)
