Hi Cynthia,

Instead of staying in Innsbruck, consider staying 6 miles east (of Innsbruck) in Hall in Tirol at the Gasthof Badl. A wonderful place run by absolutely wonderful people (Frau Steiner and daughter Sonja). Very good buffet breakfast, nice (and very reasonable restaurant), a 5 minute walk to the beautiful pedestrian zone of Hall and right on the Inn river. If travelling by train, the Badl is just a few minutes walk from the station (no train noise at the Badl). We stayed here on 3 seperate trips recently and love Hall and staying at Gasthof Badl. Ask for a room with balcony, as not all have one. Wonderful views of the Alps and the old town of Hall.

Our family of six recently spent one night in Salzburg at a very nice, clean B & B just a five minute drive from the old town of Salzburg. The price was reasonable, the breakfast typical of most B & B's in Europe, and a very friendly hostess. Their website is www.haus-ballwein.at. The B & B is on a busy street, but the house is set back a little ways so it wasn't a probelm. Also, if you stay in Hall, as recommended by another fellow traveler, I would stongly encourage a wonderful side trip just a short distance from Hall. Start in St. Martin (just northeast of Hall), pay 5E toll and travel up a thrilling mountain swithback until you reach the top. Park your car and walk 20 minutes to Walderalm, a small cluster of farms where one houses a restaurant with the most fabulous views of the mountains. Order lunch and soak in the moment with your family. A truly memorable experience.

I echoe Paul: stay in Hall, Mittenwald, or Garmisch-Partenkirken rather than Innsbruck. The scenery around Innsbruck may be spectacular, but the city itself is rather modern and sterile.

Cynthia, you have some excellent advice (above) on Salzburg and Innsbruck.

We have taken rooms several times in Vienna at Pension Nossek and once at Pension Pertchy. We can recommend both, which are centrally located. As with any such establishment, some rooms have windows onto the street ... try to get rooms located away from street noise, if possible. Have a great trip! P.
