Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced accomodation for 2 in Dusseldorf or Cologne? We will arrive at the airport in Dusseldorf and rent a car. Convention is in Dusseldorf but thinking of staying in Cologne since there is probably a little more to see?

Check hotel rates for both cities on www.hrs.com. As to location: At Cologne make sure you're either on the Western side of the Rhine river or, if you're staying in Cologne-Deutz (Eastern bank) make sure it's walking distance to the river and bridges. Also make sure the hotel provides parking. Personally I like the Best Western Premier in Cologne. Since you've got a car make sure you visit Schloss Dyck castle for at least half a day (a sunny day ideally). It's one of the most romantic chateau style castles surrounded by waters and beautiful gardens. It's my personal must-see in the area. In Düsseldorf the Media Harbour is my favorite area for its stunning architecture, great choice of restaurants and bars many of which provide waterside outside seating areas. Also climb the RhineTower in the late afternoon for the stunning view of the city and how the Rhine river meanders thru it. Düsseldorf also is the better shopping city than Cologne (Königsallee boulevard and Altstadt).
