My husband and I will be flying in and out of Madrid in May. We have 16 nights and will be picking up a car as soon as we get to the airport. We plan to keep it the entire time. Our trip will be mostly countryside and small towns but we would like to spend a couple of days touring Lisbon and Sintra and also Barcelona. We do not plan to visit Madrid - it was just the best round-trip, non-stop ticket price we could find. We would like to stay outside both Lisbon and Barcelona and take public transit in to avoid the pain of City driving/parking. Any suggestions of places? Has anyone done something similar and found a great place with public transport close by? On our last night in Spain, we'd like to stay somewhere outside of Madrid that would require us to spend not much more than an hour driving to the airport for our noon flight home. Would Segovia or Toledo be too far away? If so, any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We have never been to Spain or Portugal and my Rick books have not arrived yet.
