I would llike to stay in the Ettal area after I visit the Christmas market on November 27. Because of the snow, and whatever else could happen, I plan on taking the train instead of driving. So, now I'm out of my "comfort zone" and attempting to have accommodations lined up. Any lodging suggestions? Thanks for your help as I try to scramble this Christmas market itinerary together!

Oberammergau is right up the road from Ettal. I don't know about accommodations in Ettal itself - there wasn't much there as I recall - but in Oberammergau, I can definitely suggest the Hotel Turmwirt. It is easy to find, not too large, and is a very charming, family-run hotel.

The same bus that goes from Oberammergau to Linderhof stops at Ettal, so it's easy to get to from Oberammergau. There are trains from Munich to Oberammergau via Murnau. I stayed at Gästehaus Richter. She's very gracious and speaks good English, and her place is just a block away from the Bahnhof/bus stop. She's listed on TripAdvisor, but write to her directly at info@gaestehaus-richter.de because TripAdvisor (booking.com) charges more.

Hi Denise, I spend 4 days and 3 nights in Oberammergau this last September and visited Ettal from there... didn't check on train schedule....we had a car and it was a short 10 miniute or so drive so. Stayed at Christine Magold's lovely home. Great price, breakfast and location. Christine and her family are just wonderful. www.gaestehaus-magold.de
