Accommodations in Southern Germany - Reservations??

I'm starting to plan a trip to Germany with my wife and 3 nine year olds for next summer. I'd like to rent a car for the part of the trip focused on southern Germany and Austria and would love to be spontaneous about were we stay. All the recommendations I've seen suggest renting an apartment for families with 5 or more with advanced reservations. I'd rather be more flexible with our plans. Is it feasible to go into small towns like Fussen, Ettal, Mittenwald, etc. and find a place to stay for 5 without advanced reservations in early to mid June?

Rooms for 5 people are going to be more difficult to find. Have you already looked for rooms of this type? If they are hard to find now, with lots of time on your hands, imagine doing it on your day of travel. Also, you do know that 9 year olds need to be in booster car seats, unless they are heavier and taller than the average 9 yr. old? Will you be bringing them along from the US or renting them here? If you are just going to be traveling around Bavaria, the train might be your better option.

If you can plan your trip in 3 day segments, then I would certainly book an apartment in advance. We stayed in 2 apts last Christmas and it was a great way to go. Going solo or as a couple, I wouldn't hesitate to wing it, but with kids, I would really try to book in advance. When we went without reservations in England a few years ago, it was a pain to go to a place only to find it didn't have room for our 4.

Not in the summer, especially for five.

Thanks for the replies!! I think finding an apartment in a central location for 3 or more days is the best option. Also, thanks for the tip on the booster seats.
