Help! I am planning to be in Munich in June for two nights with my son and daughter. Can anyone recommend accomodations that are clean, located in a convenient, safe area, and reasonably priced? A bed and breakfast would be great. We will be driving so parking is an issue. Thanks so much!
I have links to a few places in Munich, but they are right in town; parking might be an issue.
I like to stay in a place in the eastern suburbs. It has plenty of parking, but they only speak German, so that might not be an option.
Freising is near the airport, about 40 min from downtown Munich by S-Bahn. I don't think parking would be a problem there. Some people like Hotel zur Gred in Freising.
We have stayed at Hotel Uhland which has free parking. You can walk or ride the U bahn to the Marianplatz area. You can ask at the front desk which is the best way to go. (Some streets are more deserted than others)
Taking the U-Bahn from Uhland to Marienplatz is possible but a little convoluted. The Theresienwiese U4/U5 station is about a block from Uhland but U4/U5 does not go dirctly to Marienplatz. You could change at the second stop, Karlstor (Stachus) and take any S-Bahn to Marienplatz, or go one more stop to Odeonplatz and take the U3/U6 to Marienplatz.
MVV recommends the first option.
Hello,
We stayed at the Euro Youth Hostel, in a private room. It was super central, clean, and well priced. It was walking distance from the centre of town, so it was a great place to stay.
PS: I definitely recommend the free walking tours in Munich. You will see and learn so much, and the guides are awesome.
Several years ago we stayed at Gasthaus Bauer. Here's their website: http://www.gaestehausbauer-gauting.de/
This pension is in the town of Gauting which is southwest of Munich. It's an easy 5 minute walk to the S-Bahn that takes you into the city in 20 minutes. The pension is also easy to drive to and there is plenty of parking since it's located in a residential area. The rooms were great with a bathroom. The website indicates there is a family room zimmer. They can also add a bed to a room--not sure about adding 2 beds. You'll have to inquire. As you can see from the pictures, there's a large breakfast buffet. Have fun on your trip!
Thanks to all for your great advice. I appreciate the information and will be contacting each place recommended to see if they have availability. Again, thanks so much!
If you are considering going on one of those "free tours" you might want to read this Rick Steves blog entry. There are much better walking tours in Munich and they don't cost that much either, usually just 10-12 euro.

Thanks for the insight into the 'free' tours. I haven't taken any of those in the past, and find the described practice a little deceptive. I appreciate the info.
Beverly,
You might have a look at This Hotel, as it seems to meet all your criteria.
It's located in a quiet residential area, provides an incredible breakfast and the staff are wonderful. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Munich Hbf, and I believe they provide FREE parking.
Cheers!
Ken is correct, the Hotel Uhland does have free off-street parking. It is a wonderful hotel/b&b which is reasonable, not cheap. The breakfast is nice, but.... their idea of fruit is generally canned fruit cocktail. They tend to run out of breakfast items and are slow to restock.
