can anyone recommend charming/quaint places to stay in champagne that won't break the bank? is reims best, or are there smaller towns worth staying in for the winery experience?
Amber: My favorite is the little town of Montmort-Lucy about 20 minutes or so from Eparnay - Eparnay is THE town for the finest Champagne houses (Moet&Chandon, etc.) In Montmort-Lucy you'll find Hotel Cheval Blanc. It is a simple inn with clean rooms at very reasonable prices. But the real attraction of this inn is the dining room. We have been there a few times and on each visit the food has been fantastic - and their recommended wines were a treat (and at a great price too). The hotel has a website - but it is only in French. To make it easier book the rooms through www.logisdefrance.com - the site is in English and there is no fee for booking the rooms. Have fun.
The "Route de la Champagne" takes drivers through the scenic vineyeards just south of Reims, described on p. 754 of France 2008. Not in Rick's book but affordable and recommended by Michelin is Ardenn Hotel in Reims. Reims is highly recommended in most guidebooks for its Cathedrale Notre-Dame (Michelin *** sight) and other attractions.
