Can anyone recommend a great B&B in Bacharach (preferably not near the trains)? Thank you!
Hi Cara,
I stayed at this youth hostel when I was in college. There were many families there, but I was there with a large school group. This is an old castle, atop the town, overlooking the Rhine. You can't beat the views.

Have fun!!
In Bacharach, I would stay at Im Malerwinkel. It's in a beautiful setting, farther from the tracks than most of Bacharach accommodation, you don't have to walk up a steep hill to get to it, and, most importantly, it's not a hostel.
We stayed at Letties and liked it.
We also stayed at Pension Lettie's last summer and really enjoyed it. She was very nice and accommodating with our many questions! Rooms were comfortable and location was good. We would stay there again.
We stayed in the apartment at Pension Binz. The apartment doesn't include breakfast, so I can't say anything about that. But, the location is great and it is quiet.
I stayed in a Pension on one trip that was good and about as far from the tracks as you can be and still see the river. It may have been Lettie's but I really don't remember. I only recall it was just down the street from one of the towers that has been converted into a residence (not sure than narrows it down). I would guess on Oberstrasse (possibly Mainzerstrasse).
Last trip we stayed at Burg Stahleck. The whole family really enjoyed it. It's a converted castle above the town that is now a really well run hostel. You need to book in advance because it is always full.
Lee, I sent an e-mail to Pension "Im Malerwinkel" last night, hoping they might make an exception and let us stay one night instead of the minimum of two. You'd recommend it?
I haven't stayed at Im Malerwinkel, but I was in Bacharach in 2004 and saw it and like the looks and the setting. In 2008 I took the train from Mainz to Bacharach just to see the insides (since I recommend it), but it was closed for the winter. I think it is a far from the trains as you can get without climbing the hill to Stahleck. BTW, if you have a rolling suitcase, don't go to Stahleck. The path is mostly unpaved and has wooden steps in places. I wouldn't call Stahleck a "converted castle". It's a hostel. It is built on the sight of a castle ruins, probably using some of the stones, to look like a castle, but built as a hostel.
Cara, I stayed at Im Malerwinkel in October 2010. The location was great. There was no noise and you could walk from the back of the hotel into the town. There's also an outdoor patio along the stream. The breakfast buffet was great (much better than I expected). The rooms were ensuite, clean but a bit old. Of course, the hotel itself is several hundred years old. Maybe during their closure last year they updated it a bit. I would definitely stay there again. Have a great trip!
A 3 yr old post, but here is where I stayed -
Privat Zimme Irmgard Orth. It's actually not too far from the tracks but we did not hear the trains at all. She doesn't have email, but the Tourist Information Office will relay an inquiry, The Barcarach website has a very good list of place to stay - www.bacharach.de
