I will be in Amsterdam along with three other adult women and a 3 year old child on January 1st, 2010. I am looking for something centrally located in the city center or close enough to be able to walk to the city center. Our budget is $40 max per person a night. I already looked into one hostel and they do not allow children to stay! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks! Amanda
What you are asking may be a little unrealistic. At the current exchange rate that is only a little over a hundred euro which is a very low number if you want something in central Amsterdam. A web site like Trip Adviser may be more useful since you can specify you rate range. Second, if all four adults are sharing the same room then you would be asking for a family room which is not common with all hotels/B&Bs. It could be easier to find two double rooms but your number then becomes every low. If someone is going to help you on this site, you need to specify more clearly what you needs are.
There are many positive comments(on other travel forums) on a B&B in A'dam called Maes Inn. Sorry I don't have other info but it looks like a very nice place for a reasonable rate. Good luck!
We are not picky as to where we stay. We just want something that will not be a long walk to the city because we have a 3 year old with us. We are willing to split up into two rooms, but we are looking to find whatever would be cheapest for 4 adults and one child. However, we need it to be realistic as well. We recently graduated from college so we do not have $400 to drop on a one night stay. We are going to 10 different countries and we have been able to find accommodations under $45 a night for all of these. I just need recommendations of places that others have stayed and we can look into them. Thanks again.
Priceline is great. Try a three star at your rate and see what happens. We found a wonderful 4 star for a 2 star rate. You can'r lose as long as your locked in on those dates. Good luck
We stayed at Vondelpark Hostel as a family. Our youngest was 7 at the time. It's not centrally located but it's close to museums and public transportation connections are easy.
The place was okay. I would stay there again. My complaint with it is my general complaint with A'dam, drugs everywhere.
The hostel doesn't allow drugs, (although someone lost their bag of pot on the stairs). That translates into walking through a crowd of pot smokers and a cloud of smoke to get into the building. The park across the street was dotted with small groups of people doing drugs.
They put our family of five into a room with six beds and said they would try to reserve it for only our family. When we got to the room, however, a sixth person was already there - which was fine because we didn't expect a private room.
I found this on laterooms.com. Jan. 1 is expensive, but the rest are within you budget. Maybe you could adjust schedule a bit.

Also, look at http://www.accorhotels.com/. They charge per room, not per person. Their Flex rate now for Jan. 1,2 ( you did not say how long) is 88.00 per room, per night,at Ibis, Amsterdam city west and your child would stay free, in the parents room.
Priceline was a good suggestion too.
I looked for 4 person rooms. You will need to call or email to be sure a child is ok to take to the room.
The problem with Hostels is that they charge per person, so you will be paying for 5 probably. A hotel will charge per room, usually. Look closely at the booking info. SOME do charge per person, esp. the cheaper ones.
John is right. Hostels are usually the better deal when you are traveling alone. When you get into a larger group a hotel, or even apartment, may be the same price.
In expensive areas, hostels might still be the better deal but you need to check prices for other options.
When looking for a triple we stayed at The Flying Pancake - a really nice B&B - BIG drawback was the location (NOT central enough for us) it is out by the zoo and my husband wasn't happy! We also looked at The Owl - but that looks (to me) to be a not very central location. We also stayed a few nights at Hotel Amadeus in Haarlem - my son loved Haarlem (he was 9 at the time).
I have also stayed at the Vondelpark Hostel and found it to be delightful. It is part of the International Youth Hostel Association (IYHA) and family friendly. In Germany and Austria most of the association hostels are family friendly with childrens' programming. I have found that the association hostels are among the best for cleanliness, quiet after 10:00PM, and safety.
A'dam is a very friendly city and a walkers' paradise. Vondelpark is a huge city park which is just across the pathway from the hostel. From there, the Rijksmuseum (one of the most famous in the world) is a few blocks away. The Central Station (main train and tram station) is about a 15 minute walk.
A'dam is a wonderful city where there is no language barrier (everyone speaks English), and the best place to start a European vacation for acclamation purposes.
A'dam is a "party town." Nightlife is exciting, safe and fun. If you visit A'dam once, it is a pretty good bet that the visit will not be a one-time thing.

Cheers!!!
B&B Batavia, they have 2 rooms that connect. The smaller room is 79euros, I think the bigger one is 99. Breakfast included, 10-15 minute walk (leisurely) to Anne Frank House. It's a little more than you want to pay, but if you don't find anything else...
