accommodation recommendations for short stop in Amsterdam

My husband and I are stopping for 2 nights in Amsterdam on our way to Germany. I am looking for a unique and reasonably priced place to stay that has easy access to airport via public, shuttle or taxi transportaion. We have one full day and 2 partial days to see Amsterdam's highlights. Any suggestions on "must see" places or things to do AND any recommendations on lodging?

How much are you looking to spend? Hotel rates in Amsterdam are cheaper mid-week, as opposed to the weekend in most other cities. A brand new boutique style hotel has recently opened just outside Centraal Station: http://www.minthotel.com/our-hotels/amsterdam The top three must-sees are the Anne Frank House, Van Gough Museum, and the Rijks Museum. Also consider the often overlooked Hermitage Museum, WWII Resistance Museum, City Museum, and the Tropical Museum. For evening entertainment be sure to check out the Boom Chicago improv comedy club, and the cinemas clustered around Muntsplien. You can often catch movies before they have opened in North America. Boogaard's (in Jordaan area) is the place to stay; read about it on TA; I'll second the sights listed earlier.

There's an Ibis hotel right next to Central Station. You will have to go to the Ibis Hotel web site for further details. Ibis hotels are all over Europe, and a little farther. Most of the time they are within walking distance of the main train station. They are usually a bit less expensive than othere because they are basic, clean, no frills, you pay for breakfast. WiFi has bee free in the lobby of all the ones we've stayed at. I'm not connected to them in any way.

It is impossible to fit all your requirements together. I'd suggest one of the design hotels of the Zuidas areas, in the sense they are really unique. Easy access from airport (10min train ride) and to pretty much everywhere with trams/subway (not within walking distance of any major site, though).

Connie, I stayed at This Hotel in September, and would certainly recommend it. The room was a bit "compact" but recently renovated and very comfortable. The staff were great, and there's a Bar next to the reception desk to get a cold "beverage" or a coffee. The Hotel is in a great location, within about a five minute walk of both the RijksMuseum and Van Gogh Museum. It's about a two minute walk to the Tram stop and the "chip style" Tram pass was VERY convenient. The trip to Amsterdam Central is about 10-minutes by Tram - very easy. Happy travels!
