I have been researching hotels, Pensions in Bavaria and Austria that are on Rick's recommended list in the guidebooks. The guidebooks list a per room price, however, when I look on the hotel websites the prices are per person per night. Is that a common occurence?
Unlike US hotels, which charge by the room, regardless of the number of people, German hotels customarily charge by the person, usually charging more per person for a single room (EZ=Einzelzimmer) than for a double room (DZ=Doppelzimmer). This is partially because German overnight accommodations usually include breakfast (Ü/F), which is a considerable expense, and proportional to the number of people.
It varies from pension to pension. Years ago, I mean many, it was always per room. Then in the last 10 yrs, or so, establishments started charging per person. I guess they figured they could get more per room. Now, when I ask, some charge per room, some per person. When I travel, I search for a room upon arrival in a town and always have the owner write down the price and indicate "pro person" or "pro zimmer". Have fun on your trip!
