Access to Murren, Switzerland

My wife and I are returning to Switzerland September 2010. We are spending one week in Murren and one week in Leysin. We will have a rental car. We plan to use some limited train and lift service throughout the two weeks.

What pass would be best for us since we will need to access Murren daily?
Should we access Murren via Stechelberg or Lauterbrunnen? Is there a difference in cost for parking our rental car in either place?

Thanks for your help.

You won't need a car for your week in Murren. It would be an unecessary expense for a car you probably won't ever use while you are there.

You could take the train to Leysin and rent a car there -- or pick up a car in Interlaken as you leave for your second week. If you plan to do day trips from Leysin, then a car is very helpful. Montreux and Vevey, Gstaad, Gruyere, even Chamonix France etc are all great day trips.

You don't say where your begining and ending locations are but maybe you will arrive in Zurich? Buy a 1/2 fare card and take the train from there to Murren. Use the 1/2 fare card all week for the mountian lift and trains. Then pick up you car and drive to Leysin -- do day trips for the week and drop off your car in Geneva and fly home.

We had a great time in Leysin and Murren just a few weeks ago. You will love it.

Thanks Janet. That's an interesting approach. We will be flying into Geneva and had planned to use both Murren and Leysin as "hubs" to tour other areas. We did that in 2008. We spent one week in Torgon, Switzerland and another in Austria. Both were timeshares. We spent two days in the Berner Oberland area and absolutely loved it.

Your suggestion makes very good sense. Spend one week slowly exploring Murren and the surrounding area without a car. Then, rent a car, move off to Leysin and use that area as a hub like we did in 2008. I like it!

Thanks again.
