Okay, James, inquiring minds want to know: explain your unexplainable love for Dinklesbuhl.
I wasn't that impressed with Dinkelsbühl. I liked Nördlingen better.
However, if you strictly take the Romantic Road bus, you won't have any choice. There is only one bus per day southbound on that part of the Road, and it stops for 35 minutes (12:05-12:40) for lunch at Dinkelsbühl, but only for 15 minutes in Nördlingen.
If you want to stay longer in Dinkelbühl, there are a few regional buses from there to Nördlingen. From Nördlingen to Munich there are hourly trains via Donauwörth and Augsburg.
If you want to spend more than a few minutes somewhere, I would get of the RR bus in Nördlingen, see it, then take the train the rest of the way to Munich.
Nördlingen, like Rothenburg, has a (almost) complete wall around it, with a Wehrgang you can walk on. You can also climb up the inside of the church tower (Daniel) in the center of town for a view of the town and the surrounding countryside.
Nördlingen sits inside an ancient meteor impact crater, called the Reis. The walls of the crater somehow resemble the lunar landscape and were use for training by the Apollo astronauts. There is a museum about the Ries in Nördlingen.
The bus stops at two places in Rothenburg. One is Schrannenplatz. I believe there is a hotel there by that name. The other stop is at the Bahnhof. There are a number of places to stay near there. Rothenburg is not that big; any place will be within short walking distance of the bus.
