A stopover close to Frankfurt airport?

We are leaving Rothenburg on a Sunday morning and our flight does not leave until late afternoon on Monday. Where would be a good place to stay that is within an hour drive to the airport? Any ideas?

Don't know where you've already been, but Heidelberg and Rudesheim am Rhein are the first 2 places that came to mind. Also, Wurzburg is just over an hour and, of course, Frankfurt has some nice areas worth visiting.

Drive to FRA (or ?) and return the car on Sunday, then take the train to Bacharach for the night. You will have plenty of time to get from Bacharach on Monday. The train will get you there ontime. That way you won't have to fool with the car (traffic delays driving, getting lost, time turning car back in) with flight time approaching.

There are many group tickets available that might save you money. How many is "We"?

You might consider Aschaffenburg. Its on the way from Wuerzburg to Frankfurt (approx. 25 miles from Frankfurt's airport). It has a splendid palace - Schloss Johannisburg, which houses a museum of art. Also, there is a large shopping district in the city center.

Another option could be Darmstadt. It has connections to Frankfurt's S-Bahn (city rail) network and is closer to the Frankfurt airport. Some of its attractions include the Residenzschloss (former palace of the Grand Dukes of Hesse & By Rhine), the Mathildenhöhe (art nouveau community), & the beautiful Russian Chapel, along with a few museums.

There are several good recommendations here. I especially like Lee's idea of turning in the car a day early and catching a train right into the airport.

In December, we spent our first night in Germany in Aschaffenburg that was mentioned above. It was one of many places in Germany that get little mention in English tourist literature that are very worthy of a visit:

We spent our last night in Würzburg, a bit more time by train from the airport but always one of my favorite stops. It is not a good car drive to airport as that autobahn is often crowded and balky.
