We are attempting to book a sleeper car from Paris to Florence. I am really perplexed as to get a double for just us or pay a lot less money and have strangers with us. Anyone got answers?

Last summer, my boyfriend and I took two night trains (Budapest - Krakow, Krakow - Prague) and shared a six-sleeper couchette with complete strangers. We both really enjoyed it and made friends with several of our roommates, one of whom we still keep in touch with. I'm sure that there are many people out there with horror stories, but for me, sharing saved a TON of money and made for some great new stories/adventures.
I did it when I was in my 20s and backpacking, and I had no problems. Probably the worst thing that will happen is that someone will snore. But now that I'm older, married and can afford more I prefer the private compartments--it's just nicer.
What is the difference between a sleeper and a couchette?
I did it in 1975 at 18 yo and I was miserable. No fresh air, 5 other people breathing what air there was, coughing, throat clearing, snoring. Not to mention the train noise, the rocking of the train, whistles, lights. The 6 (dirty) seats pulled down to be relatively flat and there was no space in between. Didn't sleep all night. I was a wreck the next day.
