What is a nice and not so expensive place/city/town/village to stay between Salzburg and Vienna?
Asit, I have to agree with the other posters that Hallstatt is really beautiful and worth a night, however I don't think it's between Salzburg and Vienna.
My recommendation would be Melk. We stayed 2 nights on our last visit between Vienna and Salzburg. The abbey is interesting, and it's a magnificent place to spend an afternoon riding bikes along the Danube. Mauthausen concentration camp is not far, and also between Vienna and Salzburg. It provides a good experience.
One of the prettiest places in Europe is Hallstatt, Austria and is between Salzburg and Vienna. Check it out and I think you will be staying there for at least one night. I will be there again in Sept and can't wait. Also a stop on Rick's GAS Tour.
A milestone post for me as this is #100 on this site.
definitely Hallstatt! it is a little slow to get to, but very very rewarding.... take the "stephanie" across the lake from the train station!
We are going to see Melk. But not stay overnight as it it very close to Vienna (where we are staying for 3 nights). We will drive to Melk from Vienna along the Danube river. As far as the concentration camp goes, we will see Dachau when we are in Munich.
take the "stephanie" across the lake from the train station!
What does that mean?
The Hallstatt train station is on the opposite side of the lake from the town so you have to take a boat, called 'Stephanie' to get from the train station to the town.
I will be traveling by car. Is it still worth it to go see?
You will be driving west on the A1 from Vienna to Salzburg. Get off the Autobahn and go south on the road that leads to Gmunden and Bad Ischl. After you go through these 2 towns there will be another road going to Hallstadt. Since you are driving you will just follow the signs to each of these towns and the signs will tell you where to go to get to the next town. You will not have to cross the lake if you are driving. The road will put you right into town after you go through a tunnel. Its about 30-45 min drive from the A1 and very much worth it. It will take you the better part of a travel day to get there and settle into your hotel or pension. You might want to stay 2 nights so you have a full day to play around in the town. You will be glad you did. Some good rooms at Gasthof Simony in the 50-60 Euro range or Pension Sarstein is towards the north end of town but has nice rooms with great balconies on the lake for around 50 Euro. The setting of the town on the lake and right up against a mountain is beautiful and some of my best photos(several of my screen savers) of Europe are from Hallstatt
Hallstatt...hands down. It is between Slazburg and Vienna. We drove it..the small villages and scenery leading to it are just great
