We, 2 healthy seniors, will spend time in May/June 2013 in Ticino, Switzerland. We would like suggestions for towns, B&Bs/apartments within walking distance of rail stations where we can live like the locals for several weeks, while getting out and about on foot and rail?

I cannot help you for lodging but in terms of location, I like the Ascona and Locarno region. Locarno has a train station. I enjoy some of the valleys above like Maggia and Verzasca. There are medieval villages in those valleys such as Lavertezzo that are amazing (accessible via PostBus from Locarno). I like to visit Bellinzona and its three castles also but I'd rather stay in Ascona.
