a good town in western Switzerland

I plan to be in Switzerland for approximately ten days, during warm weather. I want to choose one town in French-speaking western Switzerland to be at for one or two days.
Which is best : Murten ? or Lausanne ? Or another town ?
I want to be at a town that has local people who can talk in English, and they like to talk with American people.
Montreux is a "resort town", but I am not aware of any reason for me to go there, other than as a transportation link for visiting Chateau Chillon. And, does anyone recommend a warm water spa located anywhere near the south end of Lake Neuchatel ?

Lausanne is a great, fancy, and a bit $$$ town, but very pretty and close to all the local areas of Geneva (Old town is nice), Gruyere (over the hill - the castle is great), Chillon, Aigel (castle and wine-museum in wine area), and even at the far end - Sion - capitoal of Vallais canton (cool town with church and castle on a rock in center!)

I dont remeber nearly as much english spoken in Lausanne as in Bern/Zurich last I went - but that was about 10 years since I was in french part... just got back from Bern/Zurich and english was no problem. Generva is international... so Lausanne should be fine.

For spas- lots of chosie up high on the hils around that area... and Gstaad (Julie andrews summer home still?) is over the hill and very trendy.
