Hi All- My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Austria to hike the Alps. We are going to be doing a moderate "village to village" hike. We are planning either in May or Sept of 09. It seems like flying into Munich is the cheaper option and then taking the train to Salzburg. The difference in the airfare is about $300. If we go in Sept. obviously we will plan to not be there during the crowds of Oktoberfest. We were there in 2005 and had a great time. But I digress. We found a cool hostel to stay in until we get our destination for our hike. Some feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Kim
I would choose early September for best weather, some trails( obviously the higher ones) are still closed or snow covered in May.
We were in Wengen in July and the trail we hiked on had been snowy till June apparently,, but its a bit of luck bad or good to. Sept is just a safer bet IMHO
I agree that Sept. is a waaay safer option. My brother in law lived in an Alpine club hiking hut this summer in the Bavarian Alps, which I believe are a little lower than the Austrian Alps in the Salzburg region. He took pictures of his hut in April and there were about 8 feet of snow around it.
I'm planning on doing some day hiking with my parents in early October in southern Germany and upper Austria of this year. We should be fine. Hope that helps.
we spent a week in Saalfelden region in the Salzberg Alps (near Maria Alm) in October and it was glorious, although I think it was an especially warm fall. We needed shorts for hiking. It was one of the best trips yet. Check out www.alpinworld.at
