A few more Bavaria/Austria details....

I've narrowed my itinerary down with your help (thanks!) but just need a little more input: Salt mines: Garmish or Berchtesgaden, which are better? Reutte/Fussen/Garmish: things we want to do there include: Ehrenburg castle/Neuschwanstein/Lenderhof Luge ride Garmisch to do the Zugspitze Mary's Bridge Non-solo Pizza (Reutte).....heard it had the best pizza anywhere! The question is which town to stay in with those sights/activities in mind? Our friends dearly loved the Maximillian hotel, but some posts don't seem to recommend Reutte, this seems like a good jumping point though. That hotel seems kind of expensive, so we'd be ok somewhere else more reasonable (Fussen, Garmish/P, Mittenwald) but don't want to drive too much. Mapquest shows Fussen is an hours drive from Garmisch. We have a car, but is it better to just take buses to some of these places? Don't want to pay too much extra since we already have the car cost, but convenience is important too. Berchtesgaden: is it advisable to stay in Berchtesgaden, or stay somewhere near and drive there for a day trip? The posts I'm seeing sound like folks were mostly going for day trips. Please recommend whether to stay in Berch or stay in Salzburg, Zell am See or elsewhere. We'd also like to go to Werfen. After Berchtesgaden area, we'd like to go to Hallstatt. For anyone reading this that has the same questions as me (now or in the future), please check out Werfen castle and the ice caves (Eisriesenwelt), these look so amazing I'm altering my trip to go to them. (thanks to those that recommended this!) Thank you!

Also, is 3 nights too much/ not enough for the Fussen/Mittenwald/Reutte/Garmisch area?

I would stay in Salzburg, Berchtesgaden is an easy trip and Salzburg is lovely and wonderful to walk around in.

I'd suggest 3 nights in Fuessen for all the above. No need to go to Garmisch for the Zugspitze. You can take the cable car from nearby Ehrwald, Austria to get to the top of the Zugspitze. Both the trip from Garmisch and the trip from hrwald go up to the exact same spot. On another note, we didn't see the "charm" of Reutte. We have stayed twice in Fuessen (Hotel zum Hechten) and really enjoyed our stays. www.zugspitze.at Paul

For siteseeing in this area, I like to stay in Lermoos, Austria, just south of Garmisch. This is considered the Zugspitze Arena. There are a lot of reasonably priced B&B's and restaurants. Like a previous poster mentioned, you can take the cable car from Ehrwald up to the Zugspitze. Ehrwald is the neighboring town to Lermoos. The next town over is Biberwier which has an awesome, fun luge ride (highly recommended by my son and the one where my husband crashed, lol). Check out the town online: www.lermoos.at If you need lodging recommendations, send me a personal message.
