a few days in germany, close to frankfurt

I land in germany on the 22, spend a few days doing research in Mainz, then head off to Kassel until the 27th, from the evening of the 27th-30th though I'd prefer to be within a few hours of frankfurt airport. I'm thinking about Heidelberg. I'm basically looking for nice atmosphere, fairly cheap/college town type of place with some things to do on the weekend.

Heidelberg is a great college town, as is Marburg, or even Frankfurt for that matter. Prices are going to be similar no matter where you go, unless you are talking Berlin, where the prices seem to be the lowest. Will you be here the 27th of June, July or Aug.? There are tons of things going on all over Germany during the summer, especially on the weekends.

This is June... July and August are Brisbane and Melbourne for other business.

I don't think that cheap and Heidelberg belong in the same sentence.

I think that a closer match to what you are looking for would be the town of Tübingen, south of Stuttgart. However, it takes a 2-2½ hrs to get into FRA from there, so maybe it's too far away.

Würzburg is a college town not too far from Frankfurt where I have usually found a reasonably priced room. A good place to research room prices is Hotel Reservation Service:

http://www.hrs.com/web3/

I believe that Lee has used a pension there that is reasonable.

Würzburg's own website also has a list of hotels. This is common. Towns in Germany often have websites that will list hotels and are sometimes a source of bargains.

Rick's Germany 09 book says that Heidelberg is a low light.

It is kind of funny then that thousands and thousands of people keep going to Heidelberg every year. There must be something there worthwhile that people want to see. I for one, think it is beautiful town, with pretty scenery and we have been there on numerous occasions. Rick doesn't mention Hamburg in his book either, should one not go there? Or all the hundreds of gorgeous little towns up in the northern part of Germany. But everyone is crowded into Rothenberg. I haven't figured that one out either, except that it is his book and he can put his favorite cities in there if he wants to and leave the ones out that he doesn't like for whatever reason, but it does not make any of those cities more or less worthwhile to visit.

The place where I stayed in Würzburg is www.pension-spehnkuch.de. I found it independently, but later found out the Rick recommends it in his book.

Pension Spehnkuch is close to the train station, reasonable priced, and, if it matters, the owner, Markus, speaks English quite well. There is only a sink with hot/cold water in the room. The WC and shower is down the hall, but I never had to wait.
