A few days in Bordeaux are

We are considering a few days in the Bordeaux region in fall of 2014 and wondered if others have recommendations of hotels, small towns, restaurants. We have looked at Orphorus day trips to the wineries as an option. Any suggestions?

The town of Arcachon is well worth a visit. We spent two days there. We picked up a walking tour (in English) at the TI office, which took us to see some of the beautiful and fantastic 19th century vacation villas. We also hiked the amazing Dune du Pilat, about 350' high and 1.5 miles long. You can get a boat ride around the Bassin, stopping off, if you wish, to see some of the other villages. Lots of good seafood to be eaten in the area.

Saint Emilion is an easy train trip from Bordeaux, and as well as the wineries has a remarkable underground church that is well worth visiting.

Last year, we stayed in Bergerac, in a B&B near the Chateau de Monbazillac. We found this area more budget-friendly than around the Bordeaux wine region.

We did a daytrip from there to Saint-Emilion and that was enough for us. Frankly, we didn't find the Saint-Emillion/Bordeaux-area wineries area as sympa as visiting the excellent wineries around Bergerac.
