Drivers license

I am retired from the American military and live in the states. My wife and I are going to Octoberfest in Germany this year for 7 days. Will our Missouri drivers license work when we rent a car at the airport or do we need to get a European or Germany license. We'll be in country just one week. Thank you! [email protected]

Thank you for the information. We have been to Salzburg in 1998 and it was wonderful. We stayed at the castle on top the mountain. This time we will be flying into Munich and renting a car which we have not done in Europe before. Driving south and staying at the Edelweiss lodge in Garmisch/Partenkirchen area. I know they move the tourists thru King Ludwig's castle like cattle but my wife wants to see it and also go to the big flea market in Munich on a saturday. We will see the official Octoberfest parade on Sunday. If you or anyone else has advise or recommendations for about 7 days in Bavaria your input/advice is welcome. thank you

Phillip, As the others have mentioned, your Missouri D.L. should work fine in Germany, although it certainly wouldn't hurt to also have an I.D.P. One other suggestion is that a GPS along with a good Map would be prudent. Although GPS units are NOT infallible, I've found that having one has been enormously helpful on a few occasions. As you'll be there during Oktoberfest, be sure to get hotel bookings SOON. Happy travels!

If you're asking about an IDP, you don't need one for Germany since your license is in English.

So yes your Missouri drivers license will work fine for Germany. If you stray into Austria, and I highly recommend Salzburg, you need an International Drivers Permit as well as a window sticker to drive on the autobahn. The sticker can be purchased at a border "truck stop". The IDP is easiest to get at AAA at home (costs about $20). The IDP is used in conjunction with your home Driver's License. The alternative, of course, is to use public transit in Munich and only get a car for the periods you wander out of town when a train isn't convenient.

I don't know if you are intereseted in cars, but if you are I would try hard to take the BMW factory tour in Munich. It was a highlight for both my husband and myself during our time in Munich last fall.

I rent a car in Germany just about every year. I've played with the IDP on and off for years. Never had the opportunity to need it, which is a good thing I guess. The last time I got one was not for Germany, but when I thought we might be driving into the Czech Republic - still didn't need it. The German car rental will want 3 things - your valid US license, your passport and your credit card. One comment - don't plan to drive to the Oktoberfest grounds - parking is a nightmare. If your hotel is in Munich, take a taxi. If it's farther out, take the train to the main station and then the subway. I don't have to tell you which subway line - just follow the crowds. Do you know the Oktoberfest barometer? When the best time to go is? And with the best opportunity to find a seat in one of the beer tents? Mondays and Tuesdays before 3 pm. Unless you have a table reservation most nights and weekends are packed.
I hope you enjoy youeself, have a beer or two and get a chance to dance on the tables before security makes you get down. Prost!
