According to web sites, the temporary exhibit at the Hermitage closes April 25, and the new Van Gogh opens May 1. We will be in Amsterdam April 26-29. Does anyone know the status of the Van Gogh at this time?
Thanks.
It's gonna take a few days to move the paintings out of the Hermitage, and set them up at the VG Museum. So sadly there will be no VGs on display during your visit:( On the bright side the main building of Rijks Museum will be open after ten years of refurbishment. Also be sure to check out the annual World Press Photo show at the Old Chruch. It's the top show for photojournalism and the best photos from the past 12 months will be on display. It will be the hot ticket in town.
Alternatively, you could do a day trip to Arnheim and visit the Kröller-Müller Museum. It has the second largest Van Gogh collection in the world. And one of Europe's largest sculpture gardens. http://www.kmm.nl/?lang=en
I second Beatrix's post. The Kroller-Muller Museum near Otterlo has (I think) about 75 Van Gogh paintings among its collection. Plus, the sculpture garden is outstanding and fun to walk along the paths in the woods. Being located in the Netherland's largest national park, there are free bicycles available and a lot of cinder paths to ride on.
Last time we were in Amsterdam, we saw the temporary exhibits at the Rijks Museum. We were disappointed that just about the whole museum was in storage. We have been to the Van Gogh Museum. We just prefer their Dutch masters' works so much better than Van Gogh's art.
It's nice that the big museum will be back next time we're there.
