Germany to Italy by train

Two of us will be flying into Frankfurt and taking a train Rothenburg, Germany where we will stay for three days, then get back on a train and go to Florence for four days; then fly out of Florence. The two country rail-pass does not include these countries. Therefore, is it best to purchase these train passes upon arrival at the time of travel or ahead of time from here in the states?
Thanks, I await an answer,

Just buy p2p tickets it will be cheaper than an pass. Buy earlier and get some discounts.

You don't need railpasses. You need train tickets. the German Railways itinerary page provides itineraries and sometimes ticket prices. I saw 43-€ tickets between Rothenburg and Milan when I took a quick glance there. It's quite a long trip between Rothenburg and Florence, as you'll see when you check travel times at the above site.

You will spend a whole day of your vacation on the train, like 12 hours. Why not take the night train from Munich to Florence?

To each of your replies, thank you very much. Yes, the two country pass won't work. The night train from Munich, as it will be a long travel day, might be just the route to go. I can go from Rothenburg to Munich in the afternoon on sunday and sunday head to Florence.

Do realize, as well, that a two country pass wouldn't have done it. Germany and Italy don't touch. Depending on how you go either Switzerland or Austria get in the way. It would have been 3 countries. You do know how long your second trip will be, right?
