Recommendations for best way to get from Amsterdam to Normandy?
shelley, The "best way" to get from Amsterdam to Normandy is probably by train, although it will be a long travel day. Is there a specific place in Normandy that you have in mind? Using Bayeux as an example, I'd consider a train departing Amsterdam Central at 06:16, arriving Bayeux at 14:14 (time 7H:58M, 1 change). While it's a very early departure, it would get you to your destination at a reasonable hour. The above route uses Thalys (compulsory reservation) from Amsterdam to Gare du Nord. From there you'll have to use Metro or RER to get to Gare St. Lazare, which is where all the Normandy trains depart from. The simplest method appears to be RER "E" from Magenta station, which is adjacent to Gare du Nord (RER trains are on the lowest level). After arrival at Haussmann-St.-Lazare station, there will be a bit of a walk to get up to the St. Lazare station (there are Escalators as I recall). If you're planning to buy rail tickets at Amsterdam Central, be sure to have cash on hand, as they ONLY accept "Chip & PIN" credit cards! Happy travels!
