any advice where to stay for a couple with 2 kids (10 y.o.) flying into Zurich for 3 nights? Lucerne or Zurich? We are on a budget, but would like to have the Swiss ambiance and aesthetics, warmth, some sledding or skating, taking a train or two through the mountains... Most important - we are not used to snow at all, so we want to enjoy it.

If you want guaranteed snow, head to the mountains. Zurich is a fairly large city... the symbol of modern Swiss economic prowess, but I'm guessing this isn't what you're looking for. And you can't count on there being snow in the city, even in January. With kids, I would recommend the mountain resort town of Flumserberg. It's about an hour away from Zurich and it is very family-friendly. I have only driven by Luzern, so perhaps others can describe it better than I.
