Anyone have any suggestions about the best places to eat and best beer in Munich?

In my opinion, Augustiner Brau is the best beer in the world. You can get it, and some pretty good food, and any of the Augustiner establishments. The Augustiner Keller Bier Garten is a good place to start. I did go to the Augustiner Braustuben this past May and had a very good meal as well. Also, the food establishments at the Viktualienmarkt provide a large range of food items that can be eaten in the bier garten there.

Here's a website for Augustiner Braeu. It has an English version. I clicked on the "flash" play. An historical illustration (animated) pops up and somewhere on the page (upper left, next to the picture) you can click on menu. To select one of the many Augustiner Braeu restaurants, I clicked on the center of the map and selected one. Once you pick a restaurant, you can access their menu of food and drink. In fact, in Germany, most restaurants or hotels with a restaurant that have a publish their menu.

A Bavarian friend of mine took me to the Spatenhaus which I was quite impressed with. I also liked the Ratskeller - a bit touristy but decent food.

I was just in Munich yesterday! Almost all the food at the Vitualkenmarkt (I'm misspelling it - I still can't SAY it, so how can I spell it?) is great and cheap. Perfect for lunch on a nice day or for a Municher breakfast (Weisswurst, pretzel, weissbier). Augustiner establishments are the way to go usually, with the exception of the touristy Augustiner Am Dom. Ate there last night. We'd meant to go to the Augustiner Biergarten recommended by Rick Steves but rain and time and crowds forced us to change our plans. Prices are high at Augustiner Am Dom and the food is mediocre. The next door restaurant that focuses on Nurnburger bratwurst is good though, and right across from that is Andescher am Dom which is fantastic. All 3 our pricey, but at the latter two I felt like the money was well spent, at least.
(One of the confusing things about Munich is that many of the traditional restaurants have very similar names!) I would also second the Augustinerstube mentioned above. It's a few blocks away from Marienplatz by the train station and is to this date the best Bavarian food I've had in Munich and the prices are fair. Augustiner is also my favorite beer, so eating at an Augustiner establishment just makes sense! I would avoid eating at the Hofbrauhaus. It's touristy fun for a beer, but the food is overpriced when you factor into the mediocre quality. I don't think their beer is particularly good either, to be honest. Munich has so many great breweries, but the Hofbrauhaus isn't one of them. Go for the atmosphere (such as it is) but not for taste.

We found this little place hidden in a small street behind the Viktualienmarkt. It was wonderful! Had the best nuremeberger sausages grilled on an open fire. We were there in May and will go again at Christmas. http://www.bratwurstherzl.de/ Guten Appetit!!

Augustiner hands down!! Also, it seems you will be in München during the Fest so make sure to check out two of the best tents at Hacker "Himmel der Bayern" and Spaten Ochsebräterei. For a meal in all it's Bavarian glory visit the Haxnbauer on Sparkassenstr., half way between Marienplatz and the Hofbrauhaus.

Friends who live in Munich took us to this place: http://www.bratwurst-gloeckl.de/ Right by the dom. Was very cozy. Reasonable prices. Good food. Specialized in Nuremburger sausages. Place was packed with locals and visitors. Have a good trip!

Thomas, THAT'S the name of the restaurant next to Augustiner am Dom that has fantastic Nurenburger bratwurst! I've eaten there twice and recommend it, the sausages are just as good as the ones in Nurenburg.

There are a number of excellent Italian restaurants in Munich. I just cannot remember the names of them.
