I'll be traveling from Africa to Italy with a nine hour layover in Brussels in early January. I'm very nervous about leaving the airport, but I almost went crazy with a mere 5 hours in the Brussels airport before. Can I safely leave the airport and see the old city center and make it back in comfortable time? If my bags are checked through to Italy, is there any reason I would need to retrieve them before departing airport, or can I simply take my carry-on and head out? Thanks in advance!
Brussels would be one of the easier cities on a layover. The train station is right in the airport. Take the train to Brussels Central and you can walk to the Grand Place. Your bags should be checked through.
There's 2-3 trains per hour from the airport to the city, and the trip is short. You will have more than enough time to take in a museum or two. I would recommend the Musical Instrument Museum and the Royal Museum of Military History- huge display here on the world wars.
Great, thank you all for the responses!
If the European Parliament is in session, try to get there to watch it live. You get a tour of the parliament building too.
