Going to Madrid for 2 days in early Sept. Traveling from Barcelona. Is it better to take the train or fly? Where to stay and what should I try to see in the 2 days?
The train only takes 2.5 hours from city center to city center, and is very comfortable, so I think it is "better." If you buy Web fare tickets in advance on Renfe.com (61 or 62 days ahead of travel) you can find fares as low as 35 euros and many more for 47 to 58 euros. If you cannot manage to get Renfe to take your credit card, RailEurope almost matches their prices, but you have to pay a handling fee.
Word of advice. NEVER rent an auto in Europe if you can use their great train system.
Make that; NEVER drive between major cities when they are efficiently served by rail. The reason is that your car is useless in the city and the train is cost effective, fast and efficient. HOWEVER, there are plenty of reasons to rent a car when the destinations involve more rural areas.
I didn't think driving was one of his options. Unless you are already at the airport, taking the train is the fastest way. More convenient too. The price might be a wash or a little higher or lower depending on various factors, but the convenience and speed should make up for any difference. Try to purchase in advance and the train fare will beat airfare for sure.
